What is macular degeneration?

Understanding the term macular degeneration is closely related to the anatomy of the eyeball. It is known that the image we see is formed on the retina, but the macula has an important role in forming a clear image. This macula represents a very small portion of the center of the retina, being the part where the light is focused and becomes clear.

So if the condition of the macula is good, it means that we can read without problems, we can see images and texts clearly when we look at the TV or the computer.

Macular degeneration is a condition that often occurs with aging of the retina and is damage to the macula. Symptoms of macular degeneration are some of which are manifested by blurred central vision.

Macular degeneration is often difficult to detect. It evolves quite slowly and for this reason the changes and differences are difficult to notice. This condition can only occur with one eye and does not lead to a total loss of vision, the peripheral vision is not affected, but only the central one.

Causes of macular degeneration

There are several reasons for the installation of macular degeneration, and among them we can list:

  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • High cholesterol
  • Cardiovascular disease (high blood pressure)
  • Blue light
  • Aging

Under these causes, except for age, we can try to keep them under control. A healthy diet and smoking cessation can eliminate some of the causes of macular degeneration.

Blue light can be easily avoided by computer bluelight glasses

How computer goggles help you

There is a lot of research [1] that shows the fact that the blue light emitted by digital screens (computer screen, laptop, phone, tablet, TV, etc.) can penetrate the cornea and directly affect the retina. Thus, various symptoms appear such as: dry eyes, cataracts or even macular degeneration.

The most effective way to neutralize blue light is through computer goggles, which have anti-glare lenses and are able to neutralize a large amount of blue light .

Gunnar computer goggles are capable of blocking up to 98% of the blue light emitted by digital screens. Depending on the lens type , you can benefit from a protection 35% BLPF for Clear lens, 65% BLPF for Amber lens and 98% for Amber Max lens.

The protection against macular degeneration is valid for all the lenses presented above, the differences between them are given by the purpose of use and obvious, by the degree of blue light protection. For example:

  • Clear Lens is an almost transparent lens that is designed for people who work in true-color and who need to perceive colors in a real way;
  • Amber lens is a balanced lens with optimal protection against blue light, which has an amber (yellow) shade, which offers a very good contrast;
  • Amber Max Lens is for people who have acute eye sensitivity and need almost complete protection from blue light, but also for people who work mostly at night.

Other benefits of Gunnar computer glasses

In addition to stopping the risk factors for macular degeneration, computer goggles bring other notable benefits:

  • Prevents and relieves eye fatigue;
  • Increase contrast;
  • Minimize reflections;
  • Improve sleep patterns by maintaining a normal melatonin level.
