Important habits for eye health

Eye health, as well as the general health of the body, is very important. Every day, the eyes play a crucial role in our lives, helping us to assimilate most of the information. They are exposed to various unhealthy habits (looking closely at screens, UV protection, etc.), and over time, their health may deteriorate.

Even so, there are many healthy habits through which we can prevent various eye conditions:

Healthy habits for your eyes:

  1. Healthy eating - this habit is not one that benefits both general health and eye health. There are studies in the field [1], which show that there are nutrients that help us improve our vision and reduce the risk associated with aging. Among the most important vitamins and foods we find:
    1. Vitamin A: we find it mainly in foods such as sweet potatoes, green leafy vegetables or fish rich in Omega 3 (salmon, sardines, halibut, etc.).
    2. Vitamin C - is a vitamin found in fruits and vegetables such as oranges, lemons, grapefruit, strawberries or broccoli.
    3. Vitamin E - is found mainly in vegetable oils, nuts, seeds or avocados.
    4. Lutein - it is found in large quantities in green leafy vegetables. Helps filter the blue light that enters the eyes and limits retinal damage.
  2. Sun protection (UV) - Sunglasses are not just a fashion accessory. They help block ultraviolet (UVA / UVB) radiation, which is dangerous for the eyes. It is recommended that they be worn even when it is a little cloudy outside.
  3. Wear computer glasses - Looking at digital screens, whether on your phone, computer or tablet, can damage your eyes by exposure to blue light. It is responsible for conditions such as eye fatigue, headaches or sleep patterns. Computer Blue Light Glasses are specially designed to counteract the effects of blue light by blocking it.
  4. Follow 20/20/20 rule - this is a rule that is addressed to people who look at computer screen for longer periods of time. This means that every 20 minutes you look at a distance of 20 meters for 20 seconds. This exercise will help the eyes to relax and lubricate, due to the blinking process that is stimulated at that moment.
  5. Regular hand washing: The habit of putting the hand to the eyes is quite common. When we put our dirty hand to our eyes, they can be affected and various irritations and infections can occur (staphylococcus, chlamydia, gonorrhea, etc.).
  6. Daily exercise - It is already known that sports help the body. Diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure are just some of the conditions whose risk decreases if we exercise daily. This daily movement also helps the blood circulation in the eyes, which reduces the risk of vision problems.
  7. Quit smoking - Smoking is harmful to the whole body, but also to the eyes. There are studies [2] that show that smoking increases the risk of age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma or other vision problems.
  8. Get proper rest - It is recommended that an adult sleep between 7 and 8 hours a night. When the sleep schedule is appropriate, the eyes rest, blood pressure is reduced, and dry eye problems are alleviated.
  9. Consult an ophthalmologist - Perhaps the most important habit is to visit an ophthalmologist at least once a year. Through a detailed check you can detect in advance the signs of eye diseases, even if there are no symptoms yet.

Eye health is as important as the health of any organ. The above steps may seem simple, but they can have a significant impact on the health of your eyes!
